2011 – Timbuktu Challenge

Stephen Jan grew up in the quaint little New Jersey town of Tenafly. Upon graduating from a largely uneventful public high school experience he headed off to the birthplace of the Manhattan Project: Columbia University. Five years of waking up late for afternoon classes, staying up all night completing procrastinated assignments, and cramming for oh-so-important exams yielded a fistful of graduate and undergraduate degrees in Computer Science and Bioengineering. Leaving behind the academic world, Stephen dedicated his life to being a programmer by day and ninja by night, studying a wide range of martial arts and becoming a competitive athlete. Stephen is known to enjoy doing unusual and strangely interesting things. He enjoys long walks in -45 degree weather, driving to Mongolia from London, and talking to people who don’t understand English. Stephen Jan
Dennis Liaw is a deviant hailing from Queens, New York. Having dabbled in many different lifestyles, as one is prone to do growing up in New York City, he picked up numerous skill sets and perspectives that shaped his life, though whether they complement or detract from each other is yet to be determined. Boy scout, fencer, skateboarder, photographer, programmer, musician; he is a jack of all trades, and master at procrastinating at every single one of them, albeit productively. After graduating from NYU Poly with a degree in electrical engineering, the next logical step would have been to hit the work force in full swing and kick start a long and successful career. However, having felt like he had sold his soul to get his degree, he needed to make some sense out of his life. To do this he joined Stephen Jan in his mission to get to Timbuktu, and see how far across the Sahara his laid back demeanor would get him Dennis Liaw

Michael Reali is a fervent photographer, intermittent painter, incidental mosaicist, desultory traveler, casual gourmand, and practiced chef who once spent a night trapped on a mountainside in Greece with a bull. A native of Philadelphia, his work can be seen on murals throughout the city as well as in the books Old Man Drinks, and Little Old Lady Recipes. Mr. Reali graduated from Tyler School of Art with a degree in Fine Art and an extra bit of pancreas, making him a curiosity of modern medicine. Having thoroughly explored his roots in Italy, he now seeks a different kind of travel experience to feed his wanderlust, his photography, and his natural curiosity about the world. For Michael, the Timbuktu Challenge promises to be a unique photo excursion/research trip to fuel his art, whilst raising money for charity and delivering an ambulance somewhere that it’s needed most.
